Summary
Education had become a credentialing tool. Employers were able to use performance in educational institutions as a way to evaluate for skills and psychographics (conscientiousness, industriousness, organising skills, intelligence)
Since then, a lot has changed. Skills can be acquired via bootcamp programs that don’t cost money like Lambda school. They can also he acquired by nano degrees like Udacity
Instead of trying to display all the right attributes, just be so good that they can’t ignore you (basically follow Cal Newport’s advice). You can just show your awesome work, instead of trying to convince people that you can do awesome work
In the VC world, the equivalent of “so good they can’t ignore you” for first time entrepreneurs is a working product. If you’re someone without much of a track record, but come in with a working theFacebook.com, you can really differentiate yourself from everyone else
As companies like Google are beginning to ignore college degree and SAT scores, alternative credentials that announce your “so good they can’t ignore you” credentials will become much more important
