Why is it important: I want to increase the surface area of contact with awesome people. Using media platforms is going to be a very large part of doing this. Apart from Twitter, LinkedIn and my blog, I also want to be creating video and audio content and need to learn how to do that.

Summary

  1. Have a clear idea of what you want your channel to be, and how it is differentiated
  1. Ensure that you have a proper content strategy – where your website, YT channel, social media, and any paid thing are all in sync with each other
  1. The algorithm is exponential. As long as you keep churning out good content consistently, and have a few viral hits in the middle, the algorithm will reward you

Highlights

Started the YouTube Channel in mid 2017. It has grown to 1M subscribers in 3 years.
Initially started it as a content marketing platform for his medical coaching business.
Knew that this could potentially be big. Wanted to hit 5000 subscribers at first, which seemed doable. Had a friend with 4k subscribers, another friend with 20k subscribers, and another friend with 60k subscribers
Don't set numerical goals for your channel. Just focus on the content. Do see what works though!
If starting from scratch, would do the following:
  • Will focus on the website a lot more. There is a lot of scope for creating blog posts out of videos (you've done the research already)
  • Will probably convert a video into a tweetstorm. Will make it more shareable
  • May also convert it into an Instagram carousel
Have a factory (system) behind creating bricks (videos) for your channel. Don't do it all by hand. Systemize your creative and production process.

You can make more money off other platforms (like Skillshare) than you do from YouTube. But you can only have an audience on these other platforms if you already have a pre-existing audience on YT
Building an audience on YT is relatively straightforward. You can the funnel that audience into more paid things
